Hair Product Review: Wonder Curl Get Set Hair Jelly

A few weeks ago I was sent an 8oz. container of Wonder curl Get Set Hair Jelly from Scarlett Rocourt, the creator of the product. I had gotten a few email from Savvy readers asking if I’d tried it, so I was excited to check it out myself. She suggests using the product for a Wash ‘n Go on her Facebook page tutorial.Well I have to tell you, I normally don’t have much luck with Wash ‘n Gos. (A Wash ‘N Go is when you apply a conditioner and then a gel to your curly hair while it’s sopping wet, and let it air dry.) I’ve used Kinky Curly Curling Custard (KCCC) as well as EcoStyler Gel for this method, but I’ve never been able to get good results after one day. That’s not to say that those products don’t work, they do, but I learned a while ago not to try to expect my hair to look like anyone else’s. Case in point, Scarlett’s hair is 3b, 3c, whereas mine is 4a,4b. I have to admit, I was pleasantly surprised…

Scarlett''s hair after using Wonder Curl

Wonder Curl Get Set Hair Jelly – 2oz. $5; 8oz. $15, 16oz. $25

Ingredients: Aloe Barbadensis (Organic Aloe Vera) juice, Hamamelis Virginiana (Witch Hazel), Phenoxyethanol, d-Calcium Pantothenate, Panthenol, Kosher Vegetable Glycerin, Alcohol denatured, Carbomer, TEA, Tetrasodium EDTA, Citric Acid, Polyquaternium 7, Fragrance

I liked that most of the ingredients are all-natural and similar to KCCC without the hefty price tag.

So loosely following her instructions, I washed my hair using my regular routine, and detangled in the shower. Then I separated my hair into sections, and starting with a small handful of wet hair, I applied a dime sized amount of Clear Castor Oil, and pulled it through my hair with my fingers so it was evenly distributed. (I always use some type of oil under gels, I find that it seals in the moisture and doesn’t allow the gel to leave my hair “crunchy”). Then, I took a quarter-sized amount of Wonder Curl Get Set Hair Jelly, and raked it through the same section on top of the oil. I then continued with the same technique, until my whole head was covered. Here are my results…

Day 5-6

Now you know me. I don’t like using a product that only has one use, so I decided to try using the Wonder curl for a twistout. I washed my hair again, and then I used the same technique as above, but I put each section in two-strand twists and let them air dry. Here’s the results…

I really like this product! For both of these applications I have only used 1/4 of the 8oz container, it doesn’t have any “icky” ingredients, (although I would like to know what version of TEA is in this product) and I got great results and both times that lasted all week!  In fact, I went to a street fair in Brooklyn right after my first application, and I got so many compliments! We even got caught in a downpour, and my hair held up fine. The great thing about it is, you can purchase 2oz. for only $5 and try it out yourself! 2oz. was all I need for that first application, so unless your hair is longer than mine, it should be more than enough!

RATING*: 5 Savvy! - Great product, good ingredients, great prices, smaller sizes available, multiple uses, will buy again!

This looks really interesting! I’ll definitely have to try it. I usually wear a wash n go, but mine shrinks up like crazy. I was wondering, what is your overnight/morning routine with a wash n go? It looks REALLY good!!

I love the results that you got. I too find that products don’t always necessarily render the same results with my hair as with other, but the fact that the results were so great and you were able to stretch it out for a week sounds very promising!

And the tip about putting oil on your hair before using the styling product is something that I will definitely incorporate into my routine!

I’ve always been iffy on wash-n-go’s but would be willing to try this after seeing your results! Just got done using the eco styler, and it worked very well. LOVE gel-stylers for the summer months, I think it’s just about finding the right one. Your hair looks great!!

This sounds wonderful, but are we all not concerned about the denatured alcohol in the product? I though this was one of the drying alcohols. Is it just so far down the list no body is bothered? I realize I could probably put some type of oil underneath or something if I was really bothered…
    Thanks!

Dear Savvy, I have been checking out your site every since my daughter
turned me on to it. I have tried to go natural with my hair. All the relaxer is out and it is growing well, my thing is my hair is so thick and very tight,
it is almost hard to comb. I ‘ve had a relaxer most of my adult life about 35
yrs. And I am just tired of it, please help me! Can you give me some sugg.
to help me in my transition. I need something to soften my hair after washing and after it dries. It is so nappy that it is hard to comb, and I am
so tempted to go back to the relaxer, but I am fighting it as hard as I can! Please Help!!! Thank You, Nana J

@nanaj Congrats on your decision to stop using chemicals in your hair! It may seem daunting, but you can do it. Try spraying this Leave-In Conditioner inyour hair, while it’s still damp, and every morning to soften your curls. I don’t know how long your hair is, but styles like twistouts, are great ways to moisturize, soften curls, and hide new growth. Check out instructions here. Also check out my blogroll (that’s the list of blogs in the right column towards the bottom) there are more natural hair resources there. I have found that wetting hair daily is the key to awesome natural hair. I have been doing “wash and go” my whole life. I am biracial with 3c curls and I only detangle with a heavy conditioner while in the shower. Afterward, I use oils or gels, I am using homemade flax seed presently, and let my hair air dry; that’s it. I never comb or brush the hair before styling.
