DIY Workouts on a Budget

One of my New Year’s Resolutions (like half the country) is to shed a few pounds. But another New Year’s Resolution is to stick to a budget! A third New Year’s resolution is to keep things simple. That’s means I’m not going to pay for a gym membership that I will barely use, I will take exercise seriously, but I’m not spending half the day doing it. What I have been doing lately is a combo of cardio on my elliptical machine at home, along with a series of DIY workouts I’ve cobbled together from my new favorite hangout Pinterest. I’ve actually been doing twice-daily workouts of at minimum, 25 minutes, and usually max 40 mins.

I really don’t have a lot of time (or money) I can spare right now, so this works for me.

So far, this method, along with eating healthier, keeping a food diary and counting calories I’ve been able to drop about 5 pounds since the beginning of the year. Yaaay!!

So here’s what I do:

In the morning I do ONE of the following workouts:

 

OR I do a combo of one of the following workouts for 25 minutes:

Then in the evening, when I get back from work, I “wind down” by watching one of my favorite shows for 30 mins straight on the elliptical machine going at a moderate pace, or, if I have the energy, rolling hills or intervals.

That’s it! I’ve been doing this method at least 5 times a week since December and right now it’s working for me, because I totally have exercise ADD. I get bored easily, and I really need to mix things up in order to stay motivated. Also, even when the workout gets hard, I keep going, cuz I’m like “It’s only 20 minutes, come on!” I happen to already have free weights and an elliptical machine), but if you’re really on a tight budget, just start by doing one of the calisthenic workouts above.

But GET MOVING!

My goal is to lose 20 pounds by July. Wanna see my before pictures?

Nope. Not gonna happen. Nice try though.

    Hey Savvy! I had a bit of a workout makeover myself. Even though I’m asthmatic, I hit the neighborhood outdoor track back in November. I jog instead of sprint so that I don’t end of wheezing. I started off completing 2 miles (all while listening to the audio book of “The Secret”), Saturday and Sunday (as well as any days I may have off from work), and now I’m up to 3 miles, which include a combination of speed walking and jogging. Now I even job backwards and I have added a little sprinting (which I am paying for now because my body feels it!).

    After jogging I usually do some strength exercises that include sit ups, side leg lift/oblique combos, lunges, stretches, all that.

    The weekend that snowed, I figured the combination of steps per mile, and during that week I attempted to make up for not running for the first weekend since November, by jogging in place at home I also add burpees and other jump lunge moves to my at home workout that I do most times 3-5 times a week (or not, to be straight up). I already do over a mile of walking a day so I don’t feel bad if I miss a workout.

    In addition, I have adjusted my eating habits (which was hard to do because I’m already not an unhealthy eater). I eat more salads and I like to throw in chicken or fish. I eat lite dressing only, and I make my own salads and transport in a salad bowl that I bought at Bed Bath and Beyond (that they no longer sell!) Another significant thing that I do is make my own green smoothies and that’s what I snack on at the office instead of crackers.

    I’m getting more sleep (average of 6-7 hours – which is a major difference for me, who usually went on 4-5 hours of sleep a night).

    And guess what? I have lost 15 pounds so far. I feel great. It’s weird that I find myself having to buy new clothes that are smaller instead of larger. My hair is thriving, my skin care regimen is working. I kinda feel like I’ve let go a bit of a troll that was on my back for so many years. I’m not bold enough to share any before and after photos, but I do know what when I saw a photo of myself from September, I didn’t recognize that person. Now I see me.

    hey girrrrrl i loooooove your blog i discovered it looking for a do-able henna glossy do…so this year i decided to up my workouts to 4times a week….2 one hour (minimum) cardio and 2 for weights..ive stopped weighing myself for a while though it always seems to depress me..but ill definitely start taking breakfast sth i never do…

    @shizysunshine Thank you so much! I’m glad you like it! Good for you! I’m not up to one hour cardio workouts yet. (It’s sad, because I used to do them, but I could never keep going). I now only weigh myself once a week, because weighing myself everyday, you’re right, gets depressing. Breakfast is important! I’ve found on the days I have a proper breakfast, I snack less. Sleep is also important. Good luck!
